Neck Lift or Platysmaplasty in Korea

A direct result of aging is reduced skin elasticity. When the skin loses its elasticity, wrinkles appear, especially on the face and neck. The condition of the neck greatly influences the appearance of the face. Although it is less noticeable than the face, the saggy skin of the neck can betray your age easily.

Ways to get rid of neck wrinkles

Although neck wrinkles are often caused by aging, they can appear even at a young age. While some people believe that early wrinkles of the neck are congenital, it has not yet been proved by any research. The skin of the face is easy to take care of with fillers, botox, a lifting thread, and a facelift, but it’s not that simple with neck wrinkles. There are several options addressing this issue including botox and fillers which are considerably cheaper than neck lift surgery. There are other methods that are cheaper than neck lift surgery, such as neck fillers and botox. However, non-invasive options are less likely to bring a long-lasting effect since the skin of the neck is thin and due to constant movement, the skin folds and wrinkles deepen easily.

What is the reason for horizontal and vertical neck wrinkles?

The main cause for both horizontal and vertical neck wrinkles is weakened neck muscles. Horizontal neck wrinkles appear when the outer side of neck muscles loosens while the weakened inner side of neck muscles causes vertical neck wrinkles.

When the neck muscles weakened, the neck skin sags and folds, creating horizontal or vertical wrinkles. Since both horizontal and vertical neck wrinkles are mainly caused by sagging neck muscles, to improve neck wrinkles muscle tightening is needed.

What is Neck Lift or Platysmaplasty?

While fillers or botox can improve neck wrinkles by improving skin elasticity, some wrinkles will be improved only temporarily while deep or dark ones may still be visible.

The key to getting rid of neck wrinkles is tightening the platysma muscle. The platysma is a muscle that supports the whole neck. When this muscle is weakened, the neck sags and folds causing wrinkles. Therefore, strengthening the platysma muscle is essential for neck wrinkle improvement.

Platysmaplasty is a surgical procedure during which an incision is made under the chin or behind the ear and the platysma muscle, along with the skin, is pulled vertically and sutured. As a result, deep wrinkles are reduced in their size and fine wrinkles are disappeared. Since the skin of the neck is very thin and blood vessels and bones are very close, high skills and attention are required during surgery.

If the neck is droopy due to excess fat, the effect can be obtained only through liposuction.

Since only some tissues are disturbed during the operation, post-operative swelling or bruising is minimized, and it takes about 5 to 7 days on average to get back to daily activities or be able to resume work. Therefore, neck lift surgery or platysmaplasty is popular among short-term foreign visitors in Korea.

How to prevent and take care of neck wrinkles

Applying a moisturizing cream and sunscreen to the neck is important if you want to prevent the skin from drying out and causing neck wrinkles. When washing the face, thoroughly clean under the chin and neck areas.

Physical stimulation of the neck should also be taken into account. Using a smartphone for a long time and sleeping on a pillow that is too high cause neck wrinkles. Reduce the time you use the smartphone, set the monitor at eye level, keep your chin up when walking, and look straight ahead.

Lastly, since there are a lot of lymph glands in the neck, discharging waste products from the neck by stretching the neck regularly also helps prevent neck wrinkles.
